A Complete Blood Count, or CBC, is one of the most frequently ordered blood tests — and one of the least explained. Here's a quick guide to what the main values on your report actually mean.

Red blood cells (RBC), hemoglobin & hematocrit

These three values together describe your blood's oxygen-carrying capacity. Low values can point toward anemia; high values can be linked to dehydration or other conditions your doctor will interpret alongside your symptoms.

White blood cells (WBC)

White cells are part of your immune system. An elevated WBC count often suggests your body is fighting an infection or inflammation, while a low count can sometimes indicate reduced immune function.

Platelets

Platelets help your blood clot. Values outside the normal range can affect bleeding or clotting risk and are usually followed up with further tests if flagged.

Reading the report with your doctor

A CBC is a screening tool — one abnormal value rarely tells the whole story on its own. Always review your report with your treating doctor, who will interpret it alongside your symptoms and history.
